Gonzalez, Popovic claim ITA Regional doubles title

MIDLAND, Texas – The Rattler men continue to leave a legacy after clinching the ITA Fall Regionals doubles title.

Jeremiah Gonzalez and Bojan Popovic secured a doubles bid at nationals after winning the regional championship over the weekend. The duo becomes the second St. Mary's Men's Tennis tandem to advance to nationals, following in the footsteps of Adam Dockery and Brien Galon, who won the regional championship two years ago.

An all-St. Mary's standoff loomed large as the doubles finals approached for the Rattler men. In the semifinals, Gonzalez and Popovic, the No. 4 seed, had to challenge fellow teammates in Jose Antelo and Brendan Brown, the No. 8 seed. The No. 4 seeds had the momentum with them in the match and got ahead for an 8-3 victory over.

Again in the final, Popovic and Gonzalez had to brace themselves to take on one more of their own in Sai Konabanchi and James Weatherhead. The demanding doubles match carried the No. 4 seeds to the regional title as they dug in for an 8-4 victory.

Although an emotionally draining process to victory, the Rattler men showed what the future of the program holds with such a presence on the doubles scene.

Gonzalez and Popovic will now move on to play at the ITA Oracle Cup Nationals, held Oct. 13-16 in Rome, Georgia.
