They're in! Men's Tennis earns at-large regional bid

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — What could go down as the best season in the history of St. Mary's Men's Tennis will continue onto the NCAA regional round of postseason play, it was announced Tuesday evening.

The Rattlers earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II South Central Regional, securing the No. 3 seed for their best bid in the history of the program.

St. Mary's (14-11) will take on No. 2 seed Cameron (15-4), ranked 15th nationally, on Monday, May 9 in Lawton, Oklahoma. The time of the match has not yet been determined.

St. Mary's last advanced to the regionals in 2001-02, when they earned a postseason bid after finishing third in the Heartland Conference.

"I told the guys at the beginning of the season that I believed we were going to be the team flying under the radar this season," head coach Lisa Dausin said. "We were looking forward at arguably our toughest season schedule yet, and I warned them that we could lose our purpose along the way if we didn't trust the process. There is no doubt we had some bumps, twists and turns."

This season, the Rattlers won their first-ever Heartland Conference championship, securing the regular-season crown prior to falling to rival St. Edward's in the Heartland Conference Championship finals in postseason tournament play.

The history making season got started in the fall, when doubles tandem Adam Dockery and Brien Galon won the ITA South Central Region championship in doubles, earning the program its first-ever national appearance in men's tennis.

But that success didn't come without some turmoil.

Galon missed time due to injury, and St. Mary's couldn't defeat St. Edward's for a second time on the season when the Rattlers dropped their postseason tournament match to the Hilltoppers.

"But," Dausin said, "this team has proven their tenacity and resilience all spring, and that is how they have earned a shot at extending this season. It has been a campaign of many firsts. It's only fitting that … it is led by this group.

"I'm super proud, and even more excited for them."
