Super Regional preview: Rattlers seek back-to-back titles

CANYON, Texas — In a rematch two years in the making, the last two South Central Regional Champions, the St. Mary's Rattlers and the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs, will play for a berth in the Women's College World Series.
 
The Rattlers and Lady Buffs will add another chapter to a rivalry that has been brewing since they met in the 2014 NCAA DII Super Regional.
 
That season, StMU and WT went the distance in the best-of-3 series as the Lady Buffs eliminated the Rattlers enroute to their first National Championship.
 
Once again, the Rattlers travel to West Texas, this time with hopes of claiming the program's fifth regional title.
 
Despite the new look, defending champion, Rattlers having only three returning starters from last season, Hannah Fields, Miranda Medina and Sydney Wellmann, they find themselves back on the cusp of a World Series berth for the third year in a row.
 
Both WT and StMU had difficult roads to the Super Regional, having to win each of the last two games of their respective regional bracket. West Texas defeated Colorado Mesa twice with a pair of dramatic walk-off victories while the Rattlers rallied past Texas Woman's in two come-from-behind wins.
 
"They're a team that plays seven innings, just like we've been," head coach Donna Fields said of the Lady Buffs. "We're going to give them our best shot."
 
The much-anticipated first game of the South Central Super Regional will be tonight at 6 p.m.
