Five homers launch No. 21 StMU into championship contention

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Brooks Orton was nearly robbed.

But Orton's explosive, chest-bumping trot around the bases was earned as he slammed a three-run home run just over the outstretched glove of UA Fort Smith's right fielder Kasey Copper in the seventh inning of the Rattlers' second elimination game Friday.

Orton's homer in the Rattlers' second game on the day that pushed them past the Lions was his second home run on the day and fifth for the Snakes as a team in day that also saw stunning outings from starting pitchers Cody Butler and Kris Gardner.

No. 21 St. Mary's Baseball won out in both their elimination games Friday with the help of five homers, beating No. 3 seed Texas-Permian Basin 9-3 and then charting a thrilling 8-4 victory over No. 4 seed UA Fort Smith in game that ended past midnight.

StMU advances into the championship bracket, facing rival and No. 2 seed St. Edward's at Noon Saturday at Dickson Stadium. In order to claim the postseason crown, the Snakes will have to beat the Hilltoppers twice in the double-elimination tournament format as the Toppers go into the game without a loss.

Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah), an All-Conference First Team honoree, blasted the Rattlers back in the lead in a tight matchup with the Lions, putting the Rattlers up 5-4 in the seventh with his homer that sailed just over the right field fence.

The Rattlers would then dig in their final at-bats, scoring four clutch runs in the eighth that included a two-RBI single from Jacob Marler (Jr., Helotes, Texas).

Connor Camacho (Jr., Pilot Point, Texas) was solid in two innings of relief work to pick up his third save on the season, striking out three of his seven batters faced including sending two Lions to the dugout on strikes to get out of a bases-loaded situation in the eighth.

Camacho followed a stunning and passionate performance from starting ace Gardner (Sr., Coppell, Texas), who tied a career-high eight strikeouts, striking out six batters by the third inning to set a fierce tone for the game.

Gardner improved to 11-3 with the win, logging 133 pitches.

The thrilling game against the Lions followed a long break from the Rattlers' first win on the day against UTPB.

The Rattlers jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a two-RBI single from Scott Jones (Sr., College Station, Texas) in the second against the Falcons, prepping for an explosive third inning that saw three Rattler homers.

Derek Hamilton (Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas) started off the show, blasting a solo homer well beyond the left field fence, followed by a two-RBI homer from Matt Smith (Jr., Austin, Texas) two batters later.

Mario Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) got in on the fun immediately after Smith, sending his own solo homer over right field to put the Rattlers up 6-3 in their three-homer inning.

Orton lit up for the Rattlers' fourth and final homer for the game, sending a bomb over the Rattlers' bullpen for two RBIs.

A two-hour weather delay greeted the squads in the bottom of the sixth, with Smith returning after the long break with an RBI-single in the seventh for the final 9-3 score.

Ace Butler impressively took back the mound after the two-hour-and-11-minute break, showing animated intensity as he struck out two batters in the first inning of his return.

Butler logged the complete-game win with his gem that included him recording five innings of three-up-three-down for the Lions, improving his overall record to 11-2 on the season.

The Rattlers face rival St. Edward's at Noon Saturday at Dickson Stadium.
