No. 21 StMU fiercely battles but falls in title game to SEU in extras

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Typically, retiring 21 straight batters against a top nationally ranked team is enough to log a victory.

Typically.

But nothing's ever typical when rivals No. 21 St. Mary's and No. 10 St. Edward's match up as St. Edward's won out the championship battle Saturday at Dickson Stadium, 3-2, with a bases-loaded walk-off single in the 10th inning, spoiling a tremendous outing from Cole Hybner (So., Shiner, Texas).

St. Edward's will receive an automatic bid into the South Central Region Tournament with their tournament win while nationally ranked St. Mary's now waits their seeding for their possibility of an at-large bid.

This season, the Rattlers claimed a share of the Heartland Conference regular-season title along with rival and the No. 10-ranked team in the nation, St. Edward's, and earned the Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Year in Matt McClain (Sr., San Antonio) along with eight All-Conference selections.

The Rattlers won the season series against the Hilltoppers that earned StMU the right to host with SEU entering the conference tournament No. 2 in the NCAA South Central Region poll while the Rattlers entered as No. 6.

In championship action at Dickson Stadium Saturday, the Rattlers outhit the Hilltoppers 9-6, just narrowly missing the automatic bid in the extra inning affair.

Starting Rattler Hybner allowed a leadoff single from the Hilltoppers in the first and didn't allow another base runner until the bottom of the eighth inning, retiring 21 straight batters and ended his day with just 78 pitches in 8 2/3 innings tossed.

The Hilltoppers' No. 1 ace Collin Sherrod saw the Rattlers smash seven hits off him with Matt Smith (Jr., Austin, Texas) logging an RBI-single in the first for a 1-0 lead.

Derek Hamilton (RS-Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas) made it a 2-0 ballgame in the eighth with an RBI-double that the Hilltoppers would answer with two runs of their own in the very next at-bat.

The game went into extras with both pitching staffs turning to their relief pitchers with Connor Camacho (Jr., Pilot Point, Texas) picking up the loss in 2/3 innings to drop to 2-1 on the season while Hilltopper Cam Hatch logged the win in 1 1/3 innings.

For the Rattlers, Hamilton and Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah) both recorded two hits apiece against SEU to cap off two stunning tournaments as both earned All-Tournament Team selections.

Also earning All-Tournament Team for the Snakes was starting pitcher Cody Butler (Sr., Baytown, Texas), Mario Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) and Smith.

The Rattlers will bid their hopes at an at-large bid with an impressive 38-14 overall record that included a 17-game winning streak during the season.

The NCAA D-II baseball selection show will take place at 9 p.m. Sunday and can be watched on NCAA.com.
