Rattler Baseball pitches way into NCAA Regional title game

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — As the No. 6 seed in the South Central Region Tournament, St. Mary's Baseball continues dealing upset after upset.

Rattler Baseball battled defiantly Saturday, advancing to the championship title game of the South Central Region Tournament after logging two impressive wins to keep their season alive.

The Snakes won two elimination games Saturday at Suplizio Field to advance them into the title game, beating out and eliminating No. 5-seeded West Texas A&M 3-2 followed by a 6-0 shutout victory over No. 4-seeded Colorado State-Pueblo, which was previously undefeated in the tournament.

StMU will fight for its second South Central Regional title in four years, playing the winner of Angelo State vs. Colorado State-Pueblo at 4:30 p.m. in Grand Junction, Colo.

Since the Rattlers and the winner of the Angelo State vs. Colorado State-Pueblo game will each have one loss entering the title game, the game will be a winner-take-all with the victor advancing to the College World Series.

Two complete games and three home runs later, Rattler Baseball finds itself on the brink of punching its ticket to Cary, N.C., the site of the College World Series.

Kris Gardner (Sr., Coppell, Texas) started the day off with a complete-game victory over West Texas A&M, striking out seven in nine innings en route to eliminating the Buffs.

The needed win improved Gardner's record to a stout 12-3 on the season.

Playing with a 2-0 deficit heading into the fourth, Derek Hamilton (Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas) put the Rattlers right back in contention, smacking a two-run homer to tie it up 2-2 in his fourth homer on the season.

The senior connection continued for the win with Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Texas) knocking in the winning run in the eighth with an RBI-single.

The Rattlers smacked eight hits off the Buffs with Orton going 3 for 4 with a double and a stolen base and Scott Jones (Sr., College Station, Texas) going 2 for 4.

It was all Cole Hybner (So., Shiner, Texas) in the Rattlers' second elimination game against Colorado State-Pueblo.

The lefty registered his second straight gem in postseason play, tossing a complete-game shutout with four strikeouts while walking just one.

The gem was familiar for Hybner as just last weekend he stunned against No. 15 St. Edward's in the Heartland Conference championship bracket, retiring 21 straight batters.

In 17 2/3 innings pitched with two starts in postseason play, Hybner has allowed but just one run.

At the plate, AJ Perez (Jr., Alice, Texas) and Jones picked the elimination game against the only undefeated team in the tournament to blast their first homers on the season.

Perez smacked a two-RBI homer to lead off the game in the first followed by Jones hitting a solo shot in the third for the Rattlers to take a 3-0 lead.

Matt Smith (Jr., Austin, Texas) helped put it out of reach in the fifth with a two-RBI double for the Snakes to lead 5-0.

Hamilton added the final run on the day, scoring off of an error.

Twelve hits cemented the Rattlers spot in the title game with Jones going 4 for 5 with two runs scored and Keith Funk (RS-Jr., San Antonio) going 2 for 4.

The Snakes are now just one victory away from advancing to the College World Series to compete for the national title.

StMU plays the winner of Angelo State vs. Colorado-State Pueblo at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in Grand Junction, Colo. in a winner-take-all matchup.
