Rattler Baseball ends postseason run at NCAA Regional title game

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — No. 23 Angelo State's likely All-American pitcher Steve Naemark's valiant effort outweighed St. Mary's Baseball incredible trek into the South Central Region Tournament title game as the No. 6 seed.

On the heels of Naemark, named co-MVP of the tournament, Angelo State outlasted St. Mary's for the regional title Sunday, winning 5-2 to advance to the NCAA Division II College World Series.

Angelo State continued to be the torn for the Snakes as it did during the season as the Rams gave StMU both its losses in the tournament, logging the elimination game Sunday. On the year, StMU went 0-4 against the Rams.

The Rattlers 2015 deep postseason run ended their season with a stout overall record of 41-16, marking head coach Charlie Migl's sixth 40-plus-win season since entering the NCAA.

"I try to treat my team like we never have a "give-up" attitude," said Migl in his postgame interview after the game at Suplizio field.

"I really just love these guys. They never really gave me trouble all season. They worked hard, they bought into what we were trying to do and I think it really says a lot that they were able to come in here (and advance this far)," said Migl.

The Snakes started off hot in the title game in seeking their second World Series appearance in four years with a two-RBI homer from Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah) to take a 2-0 lead in the first.

But Naemark, seeing his second start for the tournament, dialed in immediately after to allow only one more hit from the Rattlers for the remaining eight innings to end the tournament with 224 pitches thrown.

Cody Butler (Sr., Baytown, Texas) was also called upon again to fight for the regional title to earn his second start for the tournament.

Butler went 4 1/3 innings against Rams with six strikeouts but couldn't hold off the offensive attack, ending his Rattler career with a 12-3 record with a team-high 89 strikeouts.

No. 1 ace Matt McClain (Sr., San Antonio) came in relief Sunday also in his second appearance of the tournament, holding off the Rams for 3 2/3 innings with two strikeouts and allowing just two hits.

While McClain was able to maintain the Rams' bats, the Rattlers couldn't get theirs going as they hit just four times of Naemark with three coming in the first inning.

"Sometimes when you got a good guy like that on the mound, a good pitcher," said Migl, "if you don't get to them early — we got to him a little bit early — you really got to get to him. Once he gets in a groove and he really did and we weren't able to do much."

In their trek to the regional title game, the No. 6-seeded Rattlers upset No. 1 seed and the No. 3-ranked team in the nation Colorado Mesa 6-5, fell to No. 23 Angelo State in Game 5, 5-2 in 10 innings, eliminated No. 5 West Texas A&M 3-2 in Game 7, going on to shutout No. 4-seeded and the No. 19-ranked team in the nation Colorado State-Pueblo 6-0 that advanced them into the championship game.

The thrilling weekend saw three Rattlers put up explosive stats that were named All-South Central Region Tournament Team including McClain, Orton and Scott Jones (Sr., College Station, Texas).

Naemark and Paxton DeLaGarza from Angelo State were named co-MVPs of the tournament.

The Rattlers ended their season 41-16 en route to claiming a share of the Heartland Conference regular-season title, advancing to their fifth regional tournament in six seasons.
