No. 3 seed Angelo State rallies late to take StMU in extras

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Angelo State was clutch this time.

No. 3-seeded Angelo State got the best of No. 6-seeded St. Mary's Baseball, rallying in extras to defeat StMU 5-2 in 10 innings after being just one out away from elimination.

After the Rattlers gained a 2-1 lead over ASU, StMU was just one out away from the win when Ram Brett David sliced a single to record an RBI for the Rams to tie it, 2-2. ASU would go on to win it, 5-2.

The Rattlers are set to play West Texas A&M in an elimination game at 1 p.m. Saturday in Grand Junction, Colo. in the third day of the NCAA D-II South Central Regional.

The late, three-run 10th inning surge from No. 23 ASU spoiled a stunning outing from senior ace Matt McClain (San Antonio) who struck out 10 batters in 8 2/3 innings of work with two earned runs, tossing an impressive 145 pitches.

Despite peppering off 12 hits to the Rams' 10, the Rattlers were unable to produce any insurance runs after taking a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning.

The Rams were able to connect at all the opportune moments in the 10th inning after tying the game in the ninth that saw them out away from elimination.

Two Rattler errors in the 10th aided ASU's extra-inning victory with Connor Camacho (Jr., Pilot Point, Texas) on the mound in relief of McClain, making all three runs scored on the righty unearned.

Camacho dropped to 2-2 on the season with the loss.

Rattler Baseball was not lacking in hits against the Rams as five Rattlers recorded two hits including Scott Jones (Sr., College Station), Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Texas), Derek Hamilton (Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas), Mario Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) and Keith Funk (RS-Jr., San Antonio).

The disappointing loss saw Orton swipe his 20th bag on the season as he stole third in the seventh that helped put the Rattlers in the lead after then scoring on a wild pitch.

The loss drops the Rattlers to 39-15 on the season as they hope to extend their season with a win Saturday against West Texas A&M at 1 p.m. in Grand Junction, Colo.
