No. 22 StMU outscores TAMIU 23-2 in doubleheader sweep

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LAREDO — No. 22 St. Mary's Baseball swung big and consistent in Friday's doubleheader sweep of Texas A&M International, winning two blowouts 12-0 and 11-2 to combine for nearly 30 hits over the two games.

The 12-0 Game 1 victory and the 11-1 Game 2 victory marked the Rattlers' 10th and 11th games on the season scoring 10 or more runs.

Currently in a race to claim the regular-season title and the right to host the Heartland Conference postseason tournament over rival St. Edward's, the Rattlers' two needed wins over TAMIU improved their overall record to 35-12 and their league record to 21-4.

The Snakes are currently one loss behind rival SEU for the No. 1 spot in the league, but hold the series tiebreaker over the Toppers.

In Game 1, the Rattlers were up 4-0 over the Dustdevils before putting a monster sixth inning, scoring six runs and adding two more in the seventh for the 12-0 victory.

Both Jacob Marler (Jr., Helotes, Texas) and Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah) led the Snakes with three RBIs each while Scott Jones (Sr., College Station, Texas) went 3 for 4 with two runs scored to give starting ace Matt McClain (Sr., San Antonio) plenty of run support off 15 hits.

StMU continued the hot bats in Game 2, smacking 14 hits in the 11-2 victory that included a triple from AJ Perez (Jr., Alice, Texas) and a two-RBI homer from Mario Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) in his first homer on the season.

Orton, Maldonado and Marler all recorded two RBIs in the second blowout on the day with Perez going 3 for 6 with two runs scored, which helped the Rattlers score in all but three innings of Game 2.

Ace McClain was lights out in his final start of the regular season in Game 1, tossing a two-hitter in a complete-game shutout over the Dustdevils.

The Rattlers' No. 1 ace, recently named a semifinalist for the D2 Baseball News Brett Tomko DII National Pitcher of the Year award, ended the regular season with a 1.69 ERA with an 8-2 record and 62 strikeouts.

No. 2 ace Kris Gardner (Sr., Coppell, Texas) followed with another stunner in Game 2, tossing eight innings with one earned run to improve to 10-3 on the season.

Max Heintzelman (RS-Fr., San Antonio) closed out the doubleheader, tossing one inning and retiring all three of his batters faced.

The Rattlers close out the series with Texas A&M International in their final game of the regular season at 1 p.m. Saturday in Laredo, Texas at Uni-Trade Stadium.
