StMU earns share of regular-season title, set to host Heartland

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LAREDO, Texas — After celebrating a 4-1 victory over Texas A&M International to end the regular season Saturday, No. 22 St. Mary's Baseball celebrated a loss.

Watching live stats in a Laredo, Texas restaurant after their win over TAMIIU that swept the series, the Rattlers celebrated as Newman defeated rival St. Edward's, which earned the Snakes the right to host the Heartland Conference Championship Tournament and the share of the regular-season co-championship.

Going into their final series of the season a loss behind St. Edward's, the Rattlers needed to win-out their series with TAMIU and hope for at least one SEU loss to Newman.

The Rattlers' best-case-scenario happened at their post-game dinner after taking care of their own business at Uni-Trade Stadium as the team watched the Jets close out a stunning 15-11 win over the Toppers.

The Rattlers and SEU now share identical 22-5 league records to share the regular-season title but the Snakes hold the tiebreaker over the Toppers as they won the season series 2-1 to earn the right to host the postseason tournament.

As the No. 1 seed, the Snakes will face No. 4 seed UA Fort Smith in the opening round of the conference tournament Thursday at a time to be determined at Dickson Stadium. For updated tournament details, please check back with RattlerAthletics.com.

The Rattlers clinched their share of the regular-season title on the heels of a standout performance from ace Cody Butler (Sr., Baytown, Texas).

The ace tossed the complete-game victory with an impressive nine strikeouts to improve his record to 10-2 on the season.

Butler ended the regular season with a team-high 71 strikeouts at a 2.61 ERA and kept the Dustdevils at five hits for the series finale victory Saturday.

The Rattlers produced four runs off of eight hits in the series finale with Scott Jones (Sr., College Station, Texas) and AJ Perez (Jr., Alice, Texas) each recording two hits apiece.

StMU went up early, picking up two runs off a two-RBI single from the Rattlers' RBI-leader Matt Smith (Jr., Austin, Texas) in the first and tacked on one run in both the second and third.

The Dustdevils (16-31, 7-19 in conference) added a run in the fourth that was unearned.

The series sweep improved the Rattlers to 36-12 overall and 22-5 in league play.

The Snakes will face UA Fort Smith in the opening round of the Heartland Conference Championship Tournament on Thursday at Dickson Stadium. Check back with RattlerAthletics.com for developing tournament details.
