Baseball closes out series with split against UA Fort Smith

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Baseball will enter the final week of the regular season chasing Heartland Conference-leading St. Edward's by a single game.

The No. 11-ranked Rattlers fell out of their first-place tie with the Hiltoppers following a 14-5 Game 1 loss to UA Fort Smith at Dickson Stadium on Sunday. But the Snakes ensured they remain in contention for the regular-season title and the right to host the conference tournament thanks to a 7-6 victory in Game 2.

The back-and-forth Game 2 victory also gave St. Mary's (32-12, 19-5) the 2-1 series victory. Due to their series victory over St. Edward's earlier this season, the Rattlers hold the tiebreaker over St. Edward's for the right to host the postseason tournament in the event they finish as co-champions of the conference.

Little went right for the Rattlers in the opener, as UA Fort Smith jumped to a 4-0 lead in the third inning. St. Mary's chipped away at the deficit to trail 5-3 after four, but the Lions effectively put away the game with a seven-run fifth inning, which included a grand slam from Ryan Justus.

Kris Gardner took the loss in Game 1, falling to 9-3 on the year. His nine victories lead the Heartland Conference. Brooks Orton, Bryce Brandl, Mario Maldonado and Al Gonzalez all had one RBI apiece in the loss.

But the Rattlers bounced back in a big way in Game 2, scoring two runs in each the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to prevail past the high-powered Lions.

AJ Perez and Mario Maldonado led the way offensively, as Perez went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Maldonado connected twice in three at-bats for two RBIs. Derek Hamilton went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Brooks Orton and Matt Smith added one RBI apiece.

St. Mary's looked to be on the verge of taking control of the game when it turned a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead over the fourth and fifth innings. But UA Fort Smith battled back, cutting the gap to 5-4 in the sixth. But RBI singles from Perez and Maldonado in the seventh helped the Rattlers build the lead back to 7-4, mitigating the threat the Lions posed when they scored twice in the seventh to pull within one.

Cody Butler earned the victory to improve to 9-2 after going eight full innings, striking out five and scattering nine hits. Closer Connor Camacho pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his second save of the season.

St. Mary's will close out the regular season next Friday against Texas A&M International in Laredo, Texas.
