No. 22 Baseball picks up needed regional win over TAMUK

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

KINGSVILLE, Texas — In its final non-conference game of the season, No. 22 St. Mary's Baseball picked up a needed win over Texas A&M-Kingsville Tuesday night, 4-3.

After ranking No. 8 in the first NCAA Regional poll, the Snakes were in a must-win Tuesday night at Nolan Ryan Field against the Javalinas, who were ranked No. 6 in the poll in gaining leverage for an at-large bid if needed.

The Rattlers played with urgency of regional hopes in grasp, scoring two quick runs in the second and taking a 3-0 lead by the fifth.

A final run in the eighth with Matt Smith (Jr., Austin, Texas) scoring off a wild pitch gave the Rattlers a then-insurance run at a 4-0 lead.

But the Javalinas (26-21) would make Smith's insurance run the game-winner as they scored three runs in their final at-bat to tease a walk-off victory, falling 4-3.

In his second start on the season Cole Hybner (So., Shiner, Texas) had a quality start for the win, tossing a career-high seven innings that were all scoreless. Hybner struck out two in his start, improving to 1-1 on the season.

Ace Matt McClain (Sr., San Antonio) threw one scoreless inning in relief with two strikeouts before Connor Camacho (Jr., Pilot Point, Texas) tossed the final inning of the game.

Scott Jones (Sr., College Station, Texas), Smith and Mario Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) all recorded two hits in the nine-hit victory while as a team the Snakes recorded three doubles and five sacrifice hits, which ties for No. 2 in the program's team record for sacrifice hits in a single game.

The Rattlers play their final series of the regular season against Texas A&M International in a three-game series starting with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Friday in Laredo, Texas.
