No. 11 StMU hits for cycle in blowout over UAFS on Senior Day

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — After a five-hour delay to Saturday's start time, No. 11 St. Mary's Baseball dominated UA Fort Smith with fiery bats as the team hit for a cycle, winning 12-4 on Senior Day.

A slew of doubles, seven to be exact, helped spur the Rattlers' blowout win over the Lions as the Rattlers cracked off 19 hits to score in all but two at-bats.

The win improved StMU to 31-11 overall and 18-4 in Heartland Conference play.

Along with their seven doubles, the Rattlers completed the team cycle with a two-RBI triple from Scott Jones (Sr., College Station) in the seventh and a solo home run from Matt Smith (Jr., Austin, Texas) in the eighth.

Seven Rattlers recorded multiple-hit games including AJ Perez (Jr., Alice, Texas) who went 4 for 5 with two doubles and Mario Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) who went 3 for 4 also with two doubles.

Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah), Derek Hamilton (RS-Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas), Smith, Keith Funk (RS-Jr., San Antonio) and Jacob Marler (Jr., Helotes, Texas) all recorded two hits apiece in the lopsided win.

After the Snakes scored six runs in the first six innings, the Lions (24-15, 12-8 in conference) made it a game in the seventh, putting up a three-spot to cut the Rattlers' led to 6-4.

But StMU quickly silenced the comeback in the very next at-bat, scoring four runs off five hits and then adding two more runs for good measure in the eighth that included Smith's fourth home run on the season.

Senior ace Matt McClain (San Antonio) had a quality start in his last home start of the regular season at Dickson Stadium, tossing seven innings against the Lions with six strikeouts.

The win improved the ace, recently named a semifinalist for the DII Baseball News Brett Tomko DII Pitcher of the Year award, to 7-2 on the season.

Connor Camacho (So., Pilot Point, Texas) closed out the game for McClain, tossing two shutout innings, retiring his six batters straight with two strikeouts.

The Rattlers complete the series with Lions with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at Dickson Stadium.
