No. 6 Softball opens first NCAA regional rankings in No. 2 slot

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — No. 6-ranked St. Mary's Softball has opened up in the No. 2 slot in the first South Central Region rankings released by the NCAA.

If the Rattlers (34-7 overall) can hold on to the No. 2 spot through the end of the regular season and the completion of the Heartland Conference Tournament, they would be in line to host next month's South Central Region 2 bracket at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's.

West Texas A&M (37-6), ranked No. 2 in the nation, is the region's top-ranked team. Angelo State (28-11-1) comes in right behind St. Mary's at No. 3, while Metro State (30-10) and Cameron (27-12) round out the top five at No. 4 and 5, respectively.

The rest of the Top 10 includes Regis (25-13) at No. 6, Midwestern State (19-18) at No. 7, Texas Woman's (20-18-2) at No. 8, Colorado Mesa (29-16) at No. 9 and Tarleton State (22-18) at No. 10.

St. Mary's (15-2 in Heartland Conference) leads Lubbock Christian (30-11, 17-3) by one game in the loss column for the top spot in the league standings. The Rattlers lead TAMIU, whom St. Mary's swept earlier this season, by three in the loss column for the right to host the Heartland Tournament. As a provisional school, Lubbock Christian is ineligible to participate in postseason play.

Winners of 18 straight, the Rattlers will return to play Friday when they travel to Tom Heath Field in Oklahoma City to take on the Oklahoma Christian Eagles for the start of a three-game series. Friday's doubleheader starts at 5 p.m.
