Doubles sweep fuels Men's Tennis past Newman

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

DALLAS — After dropping a tough decision to Midwestern State last week, St. Mary's Men's Tennis rebounded to win a close 5-4 decision with Newman on Friday.

The conference win marked the third of its kind for the Snakes as they got back to their winning ways. They did this by taking all the spoils in the doubles portion of play.

Adam Dockery and Brien Galon kicked things off at No. 1 with an 8-3 victory over Eduardo Santos and Freddy Sanchez by a score of 8-3. Michael Maciel and Matt Banner were almost equal to the task as they took a victory over Newman's No. 2 team of Alejandro Gonzales and Jose Enrique Coiras, 8-4. Joshua Mosseri and Aldo Maldonado teamed up to defeat Max Pyle and Diego Rojo Fernandez by a close margin, 9-8 (7-3).

With the advantage heading into singles, the Rattlers would do just enough as they took two matches that were needed to clinch the victory.

No. 1 Maciel and No. 2 Dockery would both drop three-set decision to Santos and Gonzales, respectively. Maciel fell by the score of 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 and Dockery 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Maldonado and Keller were also unlucky in their matches as Maldonado fell 6-4, 7-5 to Evgeniy Kim at No. 3 and Luke Keller, who was put into the lineup for singles, lost another three set decision, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.

It was Richie Foley and Galon to the rescue as they won their matches to give their St. Mary's team the victory on the day. Foley took yet another three-set match over his No. 4 counterpart Rojo Fernandez, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, and Galon came up with the good with a straight-set, 6-3, 7-5 decision over Coiras.

No. 35 StMU improved its season record to 6-8 on the year and will face another conference foe in UA Fort Smith Saturday in Dallas.
