No. 25 Baseball sweeps Heartland opener, extends win streak to 10

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

CLAREMORE, Okla. — No. 25 St. Mary's Baseball swept its way through its Heartland Conference opener against Rogers State Sunday, 7-1 and 7-3, to extend its winning streak 10 straight.

Despite harsh weather conditions that had the No. 25 Rattlers' regional mid-week contest with Tarleton State cancelled and their three-game series with RSU pushed back two days, the Snakes got right back in their winning rhythm after a nine-day absence from the field.

The twin bill sweep over the Hillcats at the Diamond Sports Complex improved the Rattlers to 14-4 on the season and a 2-0 start to league play.

The Rattlers' No. 1 ace Matt McClain (Sr., San Antonio) started off doubleheader, tossing yet another quality game with 6 2/3 innings pitched with seven strikeouts.

McClain allowed just three hits for the Hillcats, which snaked in McClain's first earned run on the season with an RBI-grounder in the fourth inning.

McClain is now 3-0 on the season with 20 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings pitched for 0.51 ERA.

At the plate, StMU recorded eight hits for seven runs, scoring its first run in the second and then adding three runs in both the fourth and seventh innings.

Mario Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) picked up a team-high two RBIs in Game 1 off a two-RBI double in the fourth while AJ Perez (Jr., Alice, Texas) and Derek Hamilton (RS-Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas) each led with two hits apiece.

Kris Gardner (Sr., Coppell, Texas) took the hill in Game 2, improving to 4-1 on the season with eight innings tossed and seven strikeouts with the Rattlers' 7-3 win.

The Rattlers' run production closely mirrored their series opener as they scored seven runs off RSU (7-7, 0-2 in conference) with a run in the first and three runs in both the fifth and seventh innings.

Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah), who currently leads the Rattlers at the plate with a hot .449 batting average, went 2 for 5 in Game 2 with a double and an RBI-triple and two runs scored.

Perez, Bryce Brandl (RS-Fr., El Campo, Texas) and Scott Jones (Sr., College Station, Texas) all joined Orton with a pair of hits each while Matt Smith (Jr., Austin, Texas) led with two RBIs.

The Rattlers complete the series with the Hillcats with a single game at Noon Monday in Claremore, Okla. at Diamond Sports Complex.
