Rattlers get back on track with 7-2 victory over OLLU

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Getting back to their winning ways was the mantra for St. Mary's Men's Tennis as they defeated Our Lady of the Lake 7-2 Tuesday at Rohrbach Stadium.

The Rattlers were able to defeat the crosstown-rival Saints with an impressive showing in both singles and doubles, only dropping one match in each respective format.

The advantage did not come easy as the No. 1 doubles team of Brien Galon (Jr., San Antonio) and Matt Banner (Jr., Mason, Texas) dropped a close 9-7 decision to Ellis and Marzetti. They were aided by their teammates at No. 2 as Adam Dockery (So., Wichita Falls, Texas) and Josh Mosseri (So., Montreal) defeated the team of Pegas and Martinez to set the stage for Richard Foley (So., Virginia, County Cavan, Ireland) and Aldo Maldonado (Fr., Sierra Tarahumara, Mexico) to give the Snakes the advantage heading into singles through their 8-2 victory over Rocha and Galaviz at No. 3.

With the score at 2-1, StMU would assert its dominance in the singles portion, but not without a few close matches to be played out.

Dockery faced Moreno at No. 1 and took the first set 6-0 before losing the following 4-6, but rallied to win the decisive one 6-1. Like Dockery, Alberto Rodriguez (So., San Francisco, Panama) won the first set rather easily by a score of 6-1, but fell in the second 3-6 and again in the third in a close 7-6 score line to give him the loss at No. 4 to Pegas.

In the closest match of the day, Maldonado outlasted Ellis in a 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 thriller to give the Rattlers the win at No. 2.

The remaining Rattlers would only need two sets to complete their matches as Luke Keller (Jr., San Antonio) beat Mazetti 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3 to push the overall score to 5-2.

Galon and Mosseri would win their matches both by the score of 6-4, 6-0, with Galon topping Rocha at No. 5 and Mosseri edging Martinez at No. 6 to complete the win for the Gold and Blue.

The win now extends the men's record to an even 5-5 on the season. They will look to take the momentum into the weekend match, when they will face yet another San Antonio school in Trinity at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Rohrbach Stadium Tennis Complex.
