Thrice as nice: Orton wins 3rd Heartland Hitter of Week award

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Brooks Orton is more than just a leadoff man these days.

He is, in many ways, the leading man.

That continues to be the case in the Heartland Conference, which on Monday announced Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah) has been named the league's Hitter of the Week for the second straight week and the third time this season.

Orton, an outfielder, continued his monstrous season by batting .500 against OPSU with five RBIs, two home runs, two doubles, five runs scored and 14 total bases. The senior had a powerful 1.167 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage while keeping his stance as the Rattlers' biggest hitter with a team-high .448 batting average.

The leadoff man's bat has helped StMU (21-4, 9-0 in Heartland Conference) to a 17-game winning streak.

Orton not only leads St. Mary's in virtually every offensive category, he also ranks among the top three in nearly every category in the entire conference. Orton leads the league in total bases (66) and runs scored (29); is tied for the top spot in doubles (10) and hits (43); ranks second in batting average (.448) and slugging percentage (.698); and ranks third in RBIs (28), on-base percentage (.526) and stolen bases (11).

The league-leading Rattlers return to the diamond Friday, when they'll start a three-game series against Texas-Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
