Solid pitching, homers down OPSU for #8 StMU's 16th straight win

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

GOODWELL, Okla. — No. 8 St. Mary's Baseball extended its winning streak to 16 with Friday's doubleheader sweep over Oklahoma Panhandle State, 6-0 and 5-3, pelting off three homers in the series along with a solid game from Matt McClain.

With the two wins, the No. 8 Rattlers are now 20-4 on the season and 8-0 in Heartland Conference play, boasting a 16-game winning streak.

The Rattlers' win streak is the program's longest since the 2011 season when the Snakes charted a 17-game winning streak.  The longest win streak in program history is 22, hit under head coach Charlie Migl in the 1993 season when his Rattlers went 45-14 overall and advanced to the NAIA World Series.

McClain (Sr., San Antonio) started the Rattlers off in his usual quality outing, tossing a complete-game shutout over the Aggies with eight strikeouts.

McClain allowed just two hits for the seven-inning game while walking three to keep a perfect record, now at 5-0 on the season.

Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah) put up the Rattlers' first run in Game 1 off an RBI-double in third before the Rattlers exploded in the fourth, scoring five runs that ended with a two-RBI homer from Orton.

Joining Orton with a two-hit Game 1 was Keith Funk (RS-Jr., San Antonio) who also scored two runs in the Rattlers' six-hit, 6-0 victory.

The Aggies (3-22, 2-7 in conference) took their only led on day in their first at-bat in Game 2, starting off with a two-RBI home run.

The Aggies then extended their lead to 3-0 in the third before the Rattlers once again did the bulk of their scoring in one inning, scoring four runs in fourth to regain the lead, 4-3.

AJ Perez (Sr., Alice, Texas) gave the Rattlers their first run off an RBI-double that set the stage for Derek Hamilton (RS-Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas) who blasted a three-run homer to give the Rattlers the lead.

Matt Smith (Sr., Austin, Texas) added another insurance run in the seventh, smacking a solo homer to give the final score of 5-3.

The first five of the Rattlers' lineup had the majority of the 10 hits recorded in the victory including Orton, Hamilton, Smith and Scott Jones (Sr., College Station, Texas) all recording two hits apiece.

Kris Gardner (Sr., Coppell, Texas) picked up the win in the nightcap, improving to 6-1 on the season after tossing 6 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and three earned runs.

Oscar Sepulveda (So., San Antonio) took over the mound to close out the win, recording his third save on the season in 2 2/3 innings pitched with two strikeouts.

The Rattlers complete the three-game series with the Aggies at Noon Saturday in Goodwell, Okla.
