Men's Tennis narrowly falls to Western New Mexico

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — In the last match of their New Mexico road trip, the Rattlers' Men's Tennis team dropped a close 4-5 decision to Western New Mexico.

The No. 39 Rattlers were looking to stay undefeated on their travels but were unable to come up with the goods as the Mustangs took the result over StMU.

Despite the loss, the Rattlers looked to be in complete control after the doubles round as the swept all three matches over their RMAC opponents.

The No. 1 team of Michael Maciel (So., Sugar Land, Texas) and Adam Dockery (So., Wichita Falls, Texas) kicked off things with a convincing 8-2 win over the team of Fuentes and Pageaul.

The duo of Brien Galon (Jr., San Antonio) and Matt Banner (Jr., Mason, Texas) equaled their teammates' result with an 8-3 victory over Gnilozubov and Nunez at No. 2. Wrapping up doubles play, Luke Keller (Jr., San Antonio) and Aldo Maldonado (Fr., Sierra Tarahumara, Mexico) saw out a close 8-6 victory over WNMU's Da Lio and Lopez to ensure all three points went the way of the Snakes.

With a 3-0 lead heading into singles action, St. Mary's looked poised to take the win needing only two of the remaining six matches to clinch. Western New Mexico had other ideas, however, and went on to take five of six in the singles portion to upset the nationally ranked Rattlers.

After a close first set, Dockery dropped a 7-6, 6-3 decision with Pageaul at No. 2. Like Dockery, Keller was unlucky not to take his first set and fell 7-5, 6-2 to Nunez at No. 4.

The tale of close first sets continued at No. 6 with Galon losing his close first set and ultimately the match, 7-5, 6-0 to Santibanez who was inserted for singles by the Mustangs.

Maldonado was unfortunate in his match at No. 3, losing both sets by the same score, 6-4, 6-4 to Da Lio. Roberto Rodriguez (So., San Francisco, Panama), who played No. 5 singles for the Rattlers, lost 6-2, 6-4 to Gnilozubov.

The lone singles win came from the No.1 Maciel as he came out victorious in a close three-set affair with Fuentes, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, but it was not enough to see out the overall win for the Rattlers.

The Snakes record now stands at 3-2 on the season and they will return the court Thursday when they take on Southeastern Oklahoma State at Rohrbach Stadium at 4 p.m.
