Men's Tennis drops match to Tyler Junior College

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

WACO, Texas — After a tough loss to NCAA Division I opponent Liberty last week, St. Mary's Men's Tennis was unable to get back to its winning ways as they dropped a 6-3 decision to Tyler Junior College Tuesday afternoon.

TJC, a perennial power in the NJCAA, had already taken down the likes of St. Mary's regional opponent Midwestern State and also Division I Incarnate Word this season before edging the Rattlers.

St. Mary's looked to be on the right track after taking the majority share of the doubles points.

The No. 1 team of Adam Dockery (So., Wichita Falls, Texas) and Michael Maciel (So., Sugar Land, Texas) dropped their match with the Apaches' Hunter and Rossoun by a margin of 8-6 before Matt Banner (Jr., Mason, Texas) and Brien Galon (Jr., San Antonio) won by the same score against Lampasas and Powell to even the match.

Richard Foley (So., Virginia, County Cavan, Ireland) and Joshua Mosseri (So., Montreal) gave the Rattlers' the lead heading into the singles portion with their 8-5 victory over Logue and Candelario.

There would be a much different story to tell in singles as the Apaches rallied to take five of the six matches to seize control of the overall score.

Maciel dropped his match at No. 1 to Hunter by a score of 6-1, 6-1.

Banner at No. 5 was defeated by the same score to TJC's Powell while Dockery lost a close first set and ultimately lost his match with Rossoun 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2.

Aldo Maldonado (Fr., Tarahumara, Mexico) suffered a setback to Lampasas at No. 3, losing 6-2, 6-2.

Foley dropped his match at No. 4 6-3, 6-2 to Candelario.

The lone singles win for the Rattlers came at No. 6 as Luke Keller (Jr., San Antonio) defeated Logue 6-3, 6-2, but it was not enough as the Rattlers dropped to 4-5 on the year.

The Snakes will return to the courts on Saturday, March 28 when they host crosstown rival Trinity at 2 p.m. at Rohrbach Stadium.
