Walk-off, pitching gem gives No. 22 StMU doubleheader sweep over LCU

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — There was nothing unlucky for No. 22 St. Mary's Baseball Friday as it swept Heartland Conference foe Lubbock Christian, 3-1 and 7-3, to give the Chaps their first-ever conference doubleheader sweep and bump the Rattlers to a 13-game winning streak.

The Rattlers notched Game 1 thanks to a walk-off, two-RBI home run from powerhouse Bryce Brandl (RS-Fr., El Campo, Texas) and won Game 2 off a gem from Kris Gardner (Sr., Coppell, Texas), who received a standing ovation from fans upon stepping off the mound after 8 2/3 innings tossed with a new career-high eight strikeouts.

The doubleheader sweep kept the Rattlers atop the Heartland Conference, improving them to 17-4 overall and 5-0 in conference play by keeping the Chaps, who averaged eight runs a game coming into the day, to just four runs for the doubleheader.

The first game of the twin bill was a tight one with both teams charting several three-up, three-down innings.

Despite five errors, the Rattlers were able to get out of several messy situations including a three-error third inning that had the bases loaded without an out. StMU was able to retire the final three batters and leave LCU scoreless.

Al Gonzalez (RS-Jr., Houston) gave the Rattlers a 1-0 lead in the second off an RBI-grounder but the Chaps would tie in the fourth.

Going into the bottom of the seventh, the Rattlers were still looking for their winning run.

With Scott Jones (Sr., College Station, Texas) reaching second on a error by the Chaps with one out, all the Snakes needed was a hard-hit single.

But Brandl gave a little more.

The first-year Rattler smacked his third big fly on the year, sending a two-run shot over right center to send the mob of the Rattler bench charging him as he crossed home.

"It's a pretty cool deal," said Brandl of his walk-off homer after the game. "I was just trying to get a base hit and got lucky and had a big hit there and was just blessed, that's it."

Matt McClain (Sr., San Antonio) kept his record clean with the walk-off, improving to 4-0 on the season after tossing his first complete game with three strikeouts.

The Rattlers carried the momentum from the walk-off into the second game, winning 7-3 backed by a stunning game from Gardner and a four-run spur in the seventh.

Gardner tossed four three-up, three-down innings for the Rattlers including a shining seventh inning when he retired the side by sending all three Chaps down hacking.

The lefty kept the Chaps scoreless until the fifth when they took the lead for the first time in the series, scoring two runs off three hits.

Jones and Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah) then both lit up the bottom of the fifth with each recording an RBI-single to put the game back on an even slate at 2-2.

Jones and Orton then went at it again the seventh, smacking back-to-back RBI-triples to put the Rattlers in a 4-2 lead.

Derek Hamilton (Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas) made it 5-2 off a fielder's choice RBI-bunt with AJ Perez (Jr., Alice, Texas) ending the four-run inning by scoring off a wild pitch.

The Chaps put up one run in the ninth off a sacrifice fly and loaded the bases with two outs, teasing the possibility of a comeback.

But Oscar Sepulveda (So., San Antonio) was called in to close the game, tossing 1/3 innings for his second save on the season.

The win improved Gardner to 5-1 on the season.

The Rattlers complete the three-game series with the Chaps at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dickson Stadium.
