Air Force deals No. 16 Women's Tennis 6-1 loss

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — After starting the season off with a perfect win Friday, the Rattlers' women's tennis team was unable to duplicate the same result, dropping a 6-1 decision to NCAA Division I opponent Air Force on Saturday afternoon.

The day started off in doubles, where the Rattlers seem poised to find an early breakthrough against the Falcons.

Due to the nature of Air Force being a Division I program, the teams would only play a set of doubles, and the winner of two-of-the-three matches would gaine the lone doubles tally to give them the advantage going into singles play. As a result, the Rattlers won a match during this period, but were unable to seize the overall point.

The No. 1 team of Mariana Rong-Cristina Lopez faced Landram-Rizvi of the Air Force and dropped a close one, 6-7 (6). Like their teammates, Jamie Lee Denton-Kaylin Kruseman were unable to fend off the team of Meyers-L. Forlini, coming up short by a score of 2-6.

The lone bright spot for the Rattlers came by way of the No. 3 team Felicity Delgado-Tyra Timm, as they were able to snatch the win from Air Force's Hatcliff-C. Forlini by a score of 6-4. But the senior-freshman duo's efforts were not enough as the Falcons took a 1-0 overall lead into singles action.

The story was much the same for the Rattlers in singles as they dropped five of the six matches played. Joanie Bryant lost at No. 6 singles to Hatcliff by a score of 6-1, 7-5. Two other Rattlers, Timm at No. 1 and Delgado at No. 5, also suffered straight-set defeats — Timm by way of Rizvi,           7-5, 6-2, and the latter Delgado, 6-0, 6-1 to L. Forlini.

Rong accounted for St. Marys' lone tally and she cruised to a win over Meyers, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Coming back from a set down, the freshman Kruseman battled Landram at No. 4 singles but fell short in the last set, dropping a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 decision.

The last match of the night was highly contested as St. Mary's Cristina Lopez was paired against C. Forlini at No. 3 singles. The women traded blows back and forth, giving the fans of both schools something to cheer about. The decisive third set went to a tiebreaker and Lopez was unable to come out on the winning end, falling 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (4).

Coach Lisa Dausin's team, ranked No. 16 in the nation, is now 1-1 on the year and will return to the courts Thursday, Feb. 12 to take on crosstown rival Incarnate Word at Rohrbach Stadium.
