Smith launches Rattler blowout of Winona State

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

HOUSTON — A grand slam from newbie Matt Smith was the stamp on Rattler Baseball's blowout, 11-3 win over Winona State Saturday night at Minute Maid Park.

The third game of the four-game Houston Winter Invitational saw St. Mary's Baseball pound the plate 11 times off 12 hits to back quality pitching from Drew Lamont in his first Rattler start.

Lamont (Jr., Pinole, Calif.) tossed 7 1/3 innings for his first Rattler win with two strikeouts to improve the Rattlers to 2-1 on the season.

The Rattlers held a hitting clinic against the Warriors (0-3) on the big stage at Minute Maid Park, putting up runs in five innings with three Snakes recording a multiple-hit day.

Smith (Jr., Austin, Texas) fueled the attack, ending the night with five RBI with three runs scored, smacking his grand slam in the fourth to give the Rattlers a 7-2 lead.

StMU went on to score four more runs, adding three runs in their final at-bat in the bottom of the eighth.

The Warriors' three runs came off two homers, a two-run shot in the second and a solo shot in the eighth, but the Rattlers created too much damage at the plate and capitalized on four Warrior errors to pick up the win.

Mario Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) recorded three hits on the night with one RBI and one run scored followed by Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah) and AJ Perez (Jr., Alice, Texas) with two hits apiece.

Orton, who tied the program's single-season stolen bases record at 30 last season, swiped two bases against the Warriors while Maldonado and Perez each logged a double.

Cole Hybner (So., Shiner, Texas) saw his first action in a Rattler uniform, pitching 2/3 innings to set up the close out for Victor Garza IV (RS-Fr., Stockdale, Texas) who pitched one inning in his collegiate debut.

The Rattlers finish the Houston Winter Invitational at 10 a.m. Sunday against host Central Missouri in Houston at Minute Maid Park.
