By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

HOUSTON — St. Mary's Baseball boasted a five-run lead early in the matchup against No. 22 Central Missouri Sunday in the Houston Invitational finale, but the Mules rallied back to claim a 8-6 victory.

The loss to the No. 22 Mules dropped the Rattlers to 2-2 on the season as they split their season-opening tournament.

St. Mary's got on the board quickly, scoring a run to lead off the game off an RBI-single from Derek Hamilton (RS-Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas) and then pumping in four runs in the second for a 5-0 lead.

But the Mules (2-2) connected by the bottom of the third, scoring five runs that was sealed by a two-run homer to end the inning to make a 5-5 ballgame.

Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah) put the Rattlers back in the lead in the sixth off an RBI-single but the Mules would go on to score two runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to claim the 8-6 win.

The Rattlers were able to load the bases in the top of the eighth to tease a comeback but ended the inning without a run.

John Lynch (Jr., Tulsa, Okla.) recorded the start for the Rattlers, tossing 2 2/3 innings. Cole Hybner (So., Shiner, Texas) took relief and was charged with loss in 3 2/3 innings.
