No. 39 Men's Tennis upsets No. 38 Colorado Mesa

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — It seems as if going away from home did not faze Rattler Men's Tennis team as it traveled to face Colorado Mesa and came out victorious 5-3 Thursday afternoon.

The day was not one of leisure for the No. 39-ranked St. Mary's team as it was pitted against the team just one spot above them in the ITA rankings.

The match seemed to be in the balance after doubles action began.

The No. 1 team of Michael Maciel (So., Sugar Land, Texas) and Adam Dockery (So., Wichita Falls, Texas) dropped a decision to the Mavericks' (6-2) team of Lyden and Weinberg.

Despite the setback, the Rattlers were able to bounce back in the remaining doubles matches to swing the tie in their favor.

At No. 2, Brien Galon (Jr., San Antonio) and Matt Banner (Jr., Mason, Texas) won 8-6 over CMU's Garcia-Rojas and Freischlag. By the identical score, Aldo Maldonado (Fr., Sierra Tarahumara, Mexico) and Luke Keller (Jr., San Antonio) defeated Brown and Alger to give the Rattlers' the advantage heading into singles play.

The job was not done yet as the affair was made even closer as the teams looked to assert their authority on the match.

Maciel bounced back from his loss in doubles with a convincing win at No. 1, 6-4, 6-2 over Lyden. His doubles partner Dockery was not as fortunate at No. 2 as he was defeated after taking the first set, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 by Weinberg.

Maldonado was also unlucky as he dropped his match at No. 3 to Garcia-Rojas 6-3, 6-1.

This was no matter as the Snakes rallied to take the remaining three singles matches to seal the win over the favored Mavericks.

Keller, at No. 4, won 6-3, 7-5 over Brown, Roberto Rodriguez (So., San Francisco, Panama) won convincingly over Freischlag 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5, and with the match sealed, Banner pulled out an outstanding three-set comeback victory over Alger, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.

The Rattlers (3-1) will conclude their road trip with a matchup against Western New Mexico.
