Baseball sweeps doubleheader over UMARY with 22 runs

SAN ANTONIO — The Rattlers spent the day bolstering their stats in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of the University of Mary, scoring 22 runs over two victories, winning 9-3 and run ruling the nightcap 13-0.
 
St. Mary's Baseball recorded 26 hits for 22 runs Saturday that gave it the four-game series sweep over the University of Mary, improving its record to 8-4 on the season.
 
The Rattlers put up impressive numbers for the doubleheader, including Game 2 seeing every starting player record a hit and a run scored with the exception of starting ace Garrett McKenzie (RS-Jr., Aurora, Colo.).  Game 2 also saw the Snakes record three triples which tied the program's single-game triples record.
 
Cody Butler (Sr., Baytown, Texas) started things off well in Game 1, tossing his second straight complete game for the win.
 
Coming off a Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week award, Butler improved to 2-1 with his win, tossing seven innings with one strikeout. All his runs were unearned, bringing the lefty's ERA down to a low 1.77.
 
McKenzie extended the pitching gem in Game 2, tossing five shutout innings with an impressive six strikeouts for his second win on the season. McKenzie's quality game put him at a season ERA of 0.77.
 
At the plate, Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah), Al Gonzalez (RS-Jr., Houston) and Derek Hamilton (RS-Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas) stole the show in Game 2 as Orton went 3 for 5 with two RBIs, a stolen base and two runs scored while Gonzalez went 3 for 3 with two runs scored and Hamilton went 2 for 3 with a game-high three RBIs.
 
Scott Jones (Sr., College Station, Texas) also recorded a multiple-hit day in Game 2, going 2 for 3 with a run scored and one RBI.
 
StMU smacked a total of 15 hits in the 13-0 Game 2 victory that included three doubles and three triples. The triple-trio included the triples of Gonzalez, AJ Perez (Jr., Alice, Texas) and Jacob Marler (Jr., Helotes, Texas).
 
The Rattlers recorded 11 hits in Game 1, scoring in the final four innings of the game for a 9-3 victory.
 
Bryce Brandl (RS-Fr., El Campo, Texas) hit a two-run bomb in Game 1 in his second homer on the season while Marler notched a game-high two hits with two runs scored and an RBI.
 
The Rattlers take to the road in their next matchup, playing Houston-Victoria at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Houston.
