McClain, run rule dominate CBC as StMU wins 6th straight

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Rattler Baseball pushed its win streak to six after sweeping Thursday's doubleheader with Central Baptist College, winning Game 1, 6-1 and enjoying a run rule in Game 2, 14-4.

Senior ace Matt McClain (San Antonio) set the stage for the day, tossing a quality game for his second win on the season after going six complete innings that saw him strike out an impressive 10 batters.

McClain was supported well at the plate as the Rattlers knocked seven hits for six runs including a two-RBI triple from AJ Perez (Jr., Alice, Texas) and three doubles across the lineup.

McClain's strong performance saw him strike out at least one battler in all but two innings and saw him strike out three batters in both the second and the sixth.

The ace now leads the Rattlers' pitching staff in strikeouts with 13 in 11 innings tossed in two appearances.

Game 2 was a hitting clinic for the Snakes as they popped off 18 hits in the 14-4 run rule after scoring six runs in the seventh to force the mercy rule.

Five Rattlers logged a pair of RBIs in the run rule over CBC including Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah), Matt Smith (Jr., Austin, Texas), Mario Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas), Bryce Brandl (RS-Fr., El Campo, Texas) and Keith Funk (RS-Jr., San Antonio).

Orton lit up the stat sheet, going 4 for 5 with one run scored and one stolen base along with Derek Hamilton (RS-Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas) who went 3 for 4 with four runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base.

Game 2 saw the Rattlers go up 4-0 by the third but the Mustangs erased it with a grand slam to tie it, 4-4.

But the Rattlers kept connecting, scoring three runs in the fifth, one in sixth and then pumped seven runs off six hits in the seventh to clinch the run-victory.

Starting pitcher Kris Gardner (Sr., Coppell, Texas) recorded the win, improving to 3-1 on the season with his second straight complete game. Gardner struck out five over seven innings.

With the doubleheader sweep, St. Mary's Baseball is now 10-4 on the season and 8-2 at Dickson Stadium.

The Rattlers complete the four-game series with the Mustangs (6-4) with a doubleheader Friday starting at 1 p.m. at Dickson Stadium.
