Men's Tennis cruises to sweep of UTPB

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO  – Facing their first conference opponent of the year, the Rattlers' Men's Tennis team proved to be a force in the Heartland Conference as they swept Texas-Permian Basin 9-0 Friday at Rohrbach Stadium.

Coming off a close loss to Incarnate Word its last time out, St. Mary's was eager to return to winning ways.

They were on the right track in doing so as they started off by taking all three doubles contests to start the day.

Michael Maciel (So., Sugar Land, Texas) and Adam Dockery (So., Wichita Falls, Texas) started things off for St. Mary's as they cruised to an 8-3 victory over UTPB's Pena and Cheney on the No. 1 court.

The next matches followed in the same fashion as both teams won 8-1 over their Falcon opponents. Brien Galon (Jr., San Antonio) and Matt Banner (Jr., Mason, Texas) took the victory on the No. 2 over Rice and Aguilar, before Aldo Maldonado (Fr., Sierra Tarahumara, Mexico) teamed with Luke Keller (Jr., San Antonio) to take down the Falcon No. 3 team of Douglis and Luna.

The Rattlers carried the momentum of the doubles sweep into singles and it yielded the same results.

Dockery was first up as he handled UTPB's Rice at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. He was followed by his doubles partner Maciel as he came up with a good performance to see off Pena on the No. 1 court, 6-4, 6-3.

On the No. 5 court, Brien Galon cruised to a solid 6-1, 6-2 victory over Quinonez before Keller defeated Luna on the No. 5 court 6-2, 7-5.

In arguably the most impressive display of the afternoon, Maldonado did not drop a game on his way to a 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 3 over Douglis.

In the last match of the day, Banner battled back after dropping the first set to Aguiar to win in a dramatic three-set, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) victory to clinch the match and sweep against the Falcons (2-2).

The Rattlers (2-1) will be back in action next Friday, Feb. 27 as they take on Metro State in Albuquerque, N.M. at 9 a.m.
