Baseball takes twin bill over Marauders in series opener

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Baseball enjoyed a two-win afternoon on a beautiful day for baseball Friday, sweeping its doubleheader with the University of Mary, 5-1 and 3-2, which saw a triple play and plenty of sharp connections at the plate.

Kris Gardner (Sr., Coppell, Texas) didn't let the offensive figure him out in his first complete game of the season in Game 1, throwing six complete scoreless innings to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Gardner's effort was well supported by the Rattlers' bats as the Snakes drilled off eight hits for five runs, scoring in all but two innings.

Matt McClain (Sr., San Antonio) kept up the pitching showcase in Game 2, tossing a one-hitter through five innings in his first season start and win. John Lynch (Jr., Tulsa, Okla.) took over the hill, recording four innings of work for his first save as a Rattler.

Despite 11 errors between the two squads for the doubleheader, the day saw some incredible baseball in the field with the pinnacle being the Rattlers' triple play in the fourth inning of Game 2.

Derek Hamilton (RS-Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas) then topped it off with an impressive shoestring catch to end the sixth inning in the nightcap.

The day also saw some prime base running from StMU as the Snakes swiped seven bases throughout the two games led by speedster Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah) who picked up three stolen bases on the day. Orton is now 7 for 7 in stolen base attempts on the season after Friday.

Game 1 saw the Rattlers smack eight hits against the Marauders, which opened their season at Dickson Stadium Friday.

Jacob Marler (Jr., Helotes, Texas) was the stud at the plate in Game 1, going 2 for 2 with two runs scored as the Rattlers' only multiple-hit player.

Six hits filled the Rattlers' stat sheet in Game 2, headed by Hamilton who went 2 for 3.

The Marauders (0-2) put a scare in the Rattlers in Game 2, scoring two runs in their final at-bat in the ninth to make a 3-2 ballgame.

With one runner on and one out, Lynch was able to retire the final two batters of the game and earned his save with an emphatic strikeout to end the game.

The Rattlers complete the four-games series with the University of Mary with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. at Dickson Stadium.
