Baseball puts on show at Spring Fling Chili Cookoff

By Joe Rodriguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — The chili was good, the crowd was better, and the St. Mary's Baseball team was the best as St. Mary's cruised to a 12-2 run-rule victory in seven innings over Houston-Victoria Tuesday night.

The Rattler bats came alive early as the team put up 17 hits against the Jaguars (2-3). St. Mary's lopsided win improved its record to 3-2 on the season.

St. Mary's wasted no time as they put up a quick four runs of support in the first two innings.

Starting pitcher Garrett McKenzie (RS-Jr., Aurora, Colo.) was effective through four innings, allowing only two hits and striking out four for his first win on the season.

Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah) contributed in every statistic for the Rattler offense as he went 4-4 at the plate, drew a walk, stole two bases, scored three runs and had three RBIs.

Derek Hamilton (RS-Sr., Lake Jackson, Texas) also had a successful debut at Dickson as he drilled a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Hamilton finished the day with three RBIs.

With the offensive outburst the Rattlers were able to finish the game in just seven innings under the mercy rule with five Rattlers recording multiple-hit game including Orton and Hamilton.

AJ Perez (Jr., Alice, Texas) recorded three hits followed by Matt Smith (Jr., Austin, Texas), Scott Jones (Sr., College Station, Texas) and Keith Funk (RS-Jr., San Antonio) all picking up a pair of hits each.

For St. Mary's, the home cooking started before the game did. Thirty-six teams of Rattler fans came out before the game in order to participate in the inaugural Spring Fling Chili Cookoff to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The teams consisted of students, faculty, athletes and fans. The event raised over $850 dollars for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which included a generous donation from Aramark.

The winning team, voted on by fans at the Cookoff, was St. Mary's ROTC which made its chili with a Jamaican twist. For their prize the ROTC members took home the first ever Chili Champ trophy and championship shirts. The runner up was the Alpha Phi sorority.

After the Chili Cookoff, fans piled into Dickson Stadium to watch the Rattlers' home opener.

With what appears to be an improved offense from last season, St. Mary's will continue to be a threat in the Heartland Conference as shown in Tuesday's blowout.

The Rattlers have a three-game series coming up this weekend against Tarleton State. The series starts with a single game at 3 p.m. Friday at Dickson Stadium.
