Solo homers doom Baseball in series-opening loss to TSU

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — On a day with beautiful spring weather, things were anything but sunny for St. Mary's Baseball as it lost a 2-0 decision to regional rival Tarleton State Friday afternoon.

St. Mary's, known for their production from the plate this season, were held scoreless for the first time this season in their second loss in as many games to their Lone Star Conference opponent.

Unlike this season's earlier meeting at Minute Maid Park in Houston, the Texans (3-2) led from the start with a leadoff home run from Alec Humphreys.

Pitchers Kris Gardner (Sr., Coppell, Texas) of St. Mary's and Tarleton's Matt Herrick held their own, keeping the opposition's bats at bay as each allowed just three hits apiece.

TSU struck again in the fifth inning when Collin Scribner duplicated Humphrey's effort in the first, putting his team up 2-0 with a solo home run to left field.

The Rattlers were unlucky in mustering up anything at the plate despite having the same amount of hits as the Texans at three and only stranding one more runner.

Picking hits for the Rattlers were Brooks Orton (Sr., Cedar City, Utah), Joe Hermsen (Sr., Overland Park, Kan.) and Mario Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas).

Herrick took the win on the day, improving to 2-0 while Gardner was credited with the loss and is now 1-1 on the year after tossing seven innings against the Texans.

Coach Charlie Migl's team drops to 3-3 on the season and will look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon as they will cap off their three-game series with the Texans.

The doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. at Dickson Stadium.
