Rattlers unable to defend late, four-goal surge from No. 14 ASU

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The Rattlers nearly held them off.  
 
But a late surge in the final frame had the No. 14 Angelo State Rams top St. Mary's Women's Soccer 4-0 after it scored four late goals, three of which were five minutes apart, at ASU Soccer Complex Sunday to remain undefeated.
 
The Rattlers were able to stave off the nationally ranked Rams throughout much of the match, holding them scoreless until the 74th minute.
 
A penalty kick broke open the stalemate with Ram Jenny Kotowych netting the first goal of the game to put the Rams in the lead, 1-0.
 
ASU then showed off its prowess in the last 10 minutes of play, netting goals in the 80th, 83rd and 85th minute.
 
The Rams (6-0) also proved its nationally ranked precision throughout the game, taking 18 shots with 16 on target to keep Rattler keeper Alyssa Taramona (Jr., Forney, Texas) busy in the net.
 
Taramona had impressive defense throughout the game, holding off the Rams for 74 minutes, and recording a stout 12 saves.
 
Her 12 saves places her No. 3 in the program's single-game saves record, which is currently set at 15.
 
The Rams' defense was also sharp, allowing St. Mary's to fire off just seven shots for the game with five shot on goal.
 
Megan Tomlin (So., Dallas) led the Rattlers with two shots on goal followed by Lynsie Shaw (Jr., San Antonio) , Kaitlyn Judge (Fr., Lubbock, Texas) and Rachel Gurinsky (Fr., San Antonio) who all recorded one shot on goal apiece.
 
Mirroring Taramona's record, the Rattlers drop to 1-4 on the season after Sunday's loss.
 
The Rattlers play cross-town Our Lady of the Lake at 4 p.m. Wednesday in San Antonio at Our Lady of the Lake Field.
