SAN ANTONIO — The winning ways of No. 9 St. Mary's Softball continued following its sweep of Friday's doubleheader against the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies as it improved to 5-0 in Heartland Conference play.
St. Mary's was victorious in convincing fashion, winning 8-1 and 7-0 behind their superb pitching and hot bats Friday night at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's.
With the victories, St. Mary's (27-4) pushed its winning streak to nine and has won 23 of its last 24 games.
A week after pitcher
Vianna Gutierrez (Jr., San Antonio) threw her second career no-hitter, Game 1 saw her strike out eight Aggie batters in a one-run, three-hit, complete-game effort, improving her record to 9-1.
In addition to her arm, Gutierrez did just as much damage with her bat as well, picking up one RBI and three hits.
A three-run home run by
Katie Nichols (R-Sr.,San Marcos, Texas) in the fourth and a two-run blast by
Laura Benavidez (Jr., Robstown, Texas) in the sixth put the game out of reach.
The nightcap was much of the same, with Rattler hitting complementing their pitching and vice versa.
A two-run homer by
Haley Richter (Jr., Hondo, Texas) highlighted the Rattler offense in Game 2, which had three other Rattlers contribute RBIs.
Once again, the Rattler pitching was on point.
Maricela Bissaro (Sr., San Antonio) threw a complete game, allowing only two hits in her fourth victory of the season, improving her record to 4-0.
On Saturday, Heartland Conference-leading St. Mary's looks to complete the sweep of OPSU with both teams set to meet at 11 a.m. at the Softball Stadium.
