SAN ANTONIO — No. 12 St. Mary's Softball blanked cross-town Incarnate Word in a doubleheader Sunday, winning 3-0 and 1-0 before a home crowd at the Softball Stadium.
On an odd day that saw temperatures swing from the 70s at the beginning of the day to the 40s by the end, there was no such shift in the Rattlers' performance.
Vianna Gutierrez picked up the Game 1 win with a complete-game shutout in which she fanned four. Gutierrez, a junior from San Antonio, improved to 7-1 on the season and capped off a week that saw her go 3-0 with a no-hitter, a shutout of Division I Incarnate Word and a victory over No. 25-ranked Angelo State.
Three-time reigning Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Year
Emily Brittain picked up the Game 2 win, her 13
th of the year, in a two-hit shutout of the Cardinals (9-10).
With the victories, St. Mary's improved to 23-4 on the season.
Katie Nichols' fifth-inning RBI single was the difference in Game 2, scoring
Hannah Fields for what proved to be the only run of the game.
Alex Rodriguez led the Rattlers in hits with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate.
In Game 1, two
Nicole Sardelich RBI singles sandwiched arguably the most exciting play of the day — a fifth-inning run from pinch-runner
LeeAnn Campos. Caught in a rundown between home and third base, Campos looked to be caught in her tracks about 10 feet from home plate. But the third baseman's throw bounced off Campos' helmet, letting her slide in safely at the plate.
St. Mary's will jump back in action Tuesday for a doubleheader at Texas A&M-Kingsville beginning at 4 p.m. in Kingsville, Texas.
