SAN ANTONIO — Vianna Gutierrez threw the second no-hitter of her St. Mary's career on Saturday, striking out 13 in a 7-0 victory over St. Joseph.

Gutierrez, who went the distance with three walks in a seven-inning shutout of St. Joseph (Indiana), helped the 12th-ranked Rattlers sweep a pair of games at the new Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's. St. Mary's took Game 2 11-3.

The victories helped the Rattlers (21-4) begin a new streak after seeing their 14-game winning streak snapped at Angelo State earlier this week, as St. Mary's has won three in a row and 17 of its last 18. This weekend's action marked the season opener for St. Joseph.

Gutierrez, aided by heavy run support that saw St. Mary's jump to a 5-0 lead by the end of the third inning, improved to 6-1 on the year and took over the team lead in strikeouts with 57.

All three St. Mary's pitchers — including Emily Brittain and Maricela Bissaro — have no-hitters to their names at St. Mary's. Gutierrez pitched her first career no-hitter in a victory at Angelo State, ranked No. 4 in the nation at the time, on Feb. 16, 2013.

In Game 2, St. Mary's briefly trailed 1-0 — and we do mean briefly. The Rattlers piled on seven runs in the second to take a commanding 7-1 lead before jumping out to a 9-1 lead in the fourth.

Nicole Sardelich went 3 for 4 with three RBIs in Game 2, while Katie Nichols drove in four runs on two hits. Haley Richter, Jourdan Alvarez, Jennifer Hernandez and Daniele Nash each added an RBI apiece.

In Game 1, Gutierrez led the Rattlers in hits with three, while Laura Benavidez and Amanda Villa added two hits apiece. Sardelich, Taylor Vidrine, Richter, Benavidez and Alex Rodriguez all finished with one RBI.

St. Mary's will be back in action Sunday, when it takes on Incarnate Word (9-8) in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at the Softball Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on the Rattler Network. Tickets are available online for $5 for the general public.
