LAS VEGAS — St. Mary's Softball took both games in Day Two of the Desert Stinger Saturday, defeating Colorado State-Pueblo and Western New Mexico.
The Rattlers got off to a flashy start, trumping Colorado State-Pueblo 8-4 in the eight-hit victory.
They then went on to defeat Western New Mexico in walk-off fashion with a
Katie Nichols (RS-Sr., San Marcos) RBI-single to win the game, 2-1.
Alex Rodriguez (Jr., Eagle Pass, Texas), who homered for the first time this season against No. 1 Central Oklahoma in Day One of the tournament, went yard again Saturday against Colorado State-Pueblo in a two-run blast in the Rattlers' final at-bat to seal the victory.
Laura Benavidez (Jr., Robstown, Texas) led with three hits while Nichols tailed a team-high three RBIs.
On the hill, starting pitcher
Maricela Bissaro (Sr., San Antonio) tossed three innings for three earned runs and three strikeouts.
Emily Brittain (Sr., Corpus Christi, Texas) closed out the game to pick up the win, pitching four innings with one earned run and four strikeouts.
Vianna Gutierrez (Jr., San Antonio) picked up the win against Western New Mexico, pitching 4.1 innings with one earned run and seven strikeouts.
Nichols and
Taylor Vidrine (Jr., San Antonio) led with two hits apiece while Nichols tallied the game-winning RBI.
Miranda Medina (Fr., San Antonio) put the Rattlers on the board to tie it up 1-1 in the sixth with a solo homerun in her first career homer.
The Rattlers conclude the Desert Stinger with a final game at 2 p.m. Sunday against Chadron State in Las Vegas.
