Softball downs No. 17 Angelo State, splits day on tournament finale

SAN ANTONIO — Playing across the region and facing nationally ranked teams, St. Mary's Softball ended the St. Mary's Classic this weekend 3-2.
 
Sunday saw the Rattlers play the final two games of tournament against two nationally ranked teams as they dropped to No. 14 Texas Woman's, 5-2, only to explode in runs against No. 17 Angelo State, winning 8-6 in a tight matchup.
 
A big second inning against the Rambelles propelled the Rattlers to a 6-2 lead after scoring four runs that included a two-RBI double from Taylor Vidrine.
 
The Rattlers took home the victory in the sixth when they scored two runs off an RBI-double from Vidrine followed by an RBI-single from Haley Richter.
 
Emily Brittain (Sr., Corpus Christi, Texas) was charged with the loss against Texas Woman's after tossing five complete innings and allowing two earned runs with three strikeouts.
 
Maricela Bissaro (Sr., San Antonio) got the start in the tournament finale against No. 17 Angelo State before Brittain took over in the third to record the win and improve to 2-2 on the season.
 
Several Rattlers had outstanding performances in the tournament, including Richter (Jr., Hondo, Texas) and Vidrine (Jr., San Antonio) who both made the All-Tournament Team. Richter tallied seven RBIs off six hits while Vidrine smacked two homeruns and recorded eight RBIs.
 
Katie Nichols (RS-Sr., San Marcos, Texas) was also impressive, hitting .563 at the plate after going 9-17 for the five-game tournament.
 
The Rattlers will travel to Las Vegas to play in the Desert Stinger starting Friday, playing West Texas A&M at 4:30 p.m.
