STEPHENVILLE, Texas —
Haley Richter and
Laura Benavidez combined for 11 RBIs,
Emily Brittain picked up her ninth win and St. Mary's Softball continued to roll.
That was the story Tuesday night, as the Rattlers outscored Tarleton State by 19 runs over two run-rule victories, sweeping the doubleheader 14-4 and 9-0.
Benavidez's grand slam and Richter's three-run blast spurred the Rattlers (12-3) to the Game 1 victory, as the power-hitting duo combined for 10 RBIs in the six-inning victory.
After watching
Vianna Gutierrez cruise to the victory in the circle in the opener, Rattlers ace
Emily Brittain took over to pitch a complete-game shutout in Game 2, improving to 9-2 on the season along the way.
While the long ball highlighted the Rattlers' offensive prowess in the opener, they showcased a different skill in the nightcap as five players accounted for the team's six RBIs.
Richter added one RBI to her day's total in the game, while
Amanda Villa led the way with two RBI from second- and- fourth-inning hits.
Incidentally, things didn't look like they'd be so easy early on.
Tarleton State (7-8) held St. Mary's offense at bay, keeping the Rattlers scoreless until the fourth inning of Game 1. In fact, St. Mary's trailed 3-0 following a three-run TexAnn home run in the third inning.
Then, the Snakes got things going. Benavidez's grand slam in the fourth put St. Mary's up 4-3, a lead the Rattlers quickly added to with five more runs in the fifth and another five in the sixth to put the game away.
StMU kept the momentum going in Game 2, scoring four runs in the second en route to winning 9-0.
St. Mary's will be back on the diamond Friday when it opens up the Rattler Invitational at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's.
