SAN ANTONIO — Somehow, these Rattlers just find a way.
A day after
Haley Richter's walk-off single in extra innings put away Lubbock Christian, Rattler second baseman
Amanda Villa fired an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to have the same effect Saturday.
Villa's go-ahead hit put the finishing touch on a 4-3 victory over the Chaps at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's, as St. Mary's completed the series sweep of LCU to begin Heartland Conference play 3-0.
Coming in relief of
Maricela Bissaro in the fifth inning,
Emily Brittain pitched three scoreless innings, scattering just two hits to help the Rattlers (10-1) win their sixth in a row. Brittain, the reigning Heartland Conference Player of the Week, improved to 8-2 on the season with the win.
StMU got off to a rocky start Saturday, giving up two runs in the first to fall in a quick 2-0 hole. But the Rattlers rallied back to take a 3-2 lead in the third, as
Nicole Sardelich drilled a two-RBI double down the right-field line to tie the game at 2-2. Moments later,
Haley Richter put the Rattlers up a run with an RBI single to right field.
However, Lubbock Christian would battle back in the fourth to even things up again at 3-3.
That's when Villa went to work, driving in pinch runner
LeeAnn Campos for what proved to be the winning run.
St. Mary's Softball will be back in action Tuesday, when it travels Stephenville, Texas to take on Tarleton State for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
