OKALHOMA CITY — The road woes continued for St. Mary's Women's Basketball Saturday as it dropped to Oklahoma Christian 75-66 at the Eagles' Nest.
A wild second half changed the game for the Rattlers, as the Eagles were able to gain their first lead of the day in the final frame, spurring a victory that celebrated the Eagles' Roz Hamilton who recorded her 1,000
th career point after scoring a team-high 11 points.
It began to look grim for the Rattlers, who led by four at the half, 35-31, after leading by as much as 11, just minutes into the second half as the Eagles jumped ahead for the first time in the game at the 18-minute mark.
Turnovers and missed free throws began to add up for the Rattlers in the final minutes as the Eagles (10-7, 6-4 in conference) lit up behind the arc to record six 3's and jump to an 11-point lead with 5:26 left on the clock.
St. Mary's was able to dwindle the lead to five with just under a minute remaining but off-target, key shots and OC's press break had the Rattlers in the deficit by nine at the final buzzer.
The Rattlers' usual leading scorer
Jackie Woods (Sr., San Antonio) was held to nine points by the Eagles' defense Saturday. The nine-point mark was a stark contrast to the last time Woods was in the Eagles' Nest, which she scored 32 points to mark her fifth in the St. Mary's Record Books for single-game scoring as a junior.
With the loss, the Rattlers still hold the No. 2 spot in the Heartland Conference with a 13-4 overall record and 8-3 league record. Texas A&M International remains the league's No. 1 team with an identical 13-4 overall record to the Rattlers and a slightly cleaner 9-2 conference record.
Despite early foul trouble
Morgan Pullins (Jr., Franklin, Mich.) led in scoring for the Rattlers with 13 followed by
Dezirae Elias (So., Chandler, Ariz.) with 12. Elias also recorded an impressive five steals along with three assists.
It was a career game for
Danielle Vargas (Jr., Endinburg, Texas) at the Eagles' Nest Saturday as the guard recorded a career-high nine points off 3-5 shooting from behind the arc.
The Rattlers return to the comfort of home in their next contest as they look to remain undefeated at Bill Greehey Arena as they face Newman at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
