SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Women's Basketball is making it look easy.
The Rattlers continued their reign of dominance in the Heartland Conference Saturday, flying past provisional member McMurry in an 18-point blowout, 69-51.
Remaining unbeaten at home, the Rattlers' 8-1 conference record and 13-2 overall record has them tied for the top spot in the league along with Texas A&M International, which they face in a showdown in their next matchup.
The Warhawks saw
Morgan Pullins' (Jr., Franklin, Mich.) second straight double-double Saturday at Bill Greehey Arena, as the forward pulled in a game-high 11 rebounds along with 17 points.
Jackie Woods (Sr., San Antonio) led the day in scoring with 21 points, going an impressive 8-11 from the floor. Woods and
Dezirae Elias (So., Chandler, Ariz.) both recorded four assists piece with Elias chipping in 10 points.
The Warhawks experienced a lead just once throughout the game as they led by two at the 18-minute mark in the first half. The Rattlers were able to quickly capture the edge, leading by 11 by the 6-minute mark and went into the half up nine, 32-23.
Woods and Pullins were the main contributors in the first half, combining to score 25 of the Rattlers' 32 points.
The Rattlers got a scare in the final frame when the Warhawks (2-11, 2-5 in conference) flashed on an eight-point run to bring it within two, 39-37, four minutes into the half.
But McMurry's shot at closing in on the Rattlers was brief as St. Mary's then went on tear, recording a 16-0 run.
"We had about a four or five minute stretch where we lost our focus," said head coach
Jason Martens of McMurry's comeback that brought it within two in the second half. "It became a ballgame but we refocused and all the sudden we exploded."
The Rattlers dominated around the bucket, scoring 48 points in the paint. The squad also showed control, recording their second contest with their assists outnumbering their turnovers.
It will be a battle of the league's top two teams in the Rattlers' next contest as St. Mary's and Texas A&M International fight for the No. 1 spot in the conference at 1 p.m. Saturday on the Dustdevils' home court in Laredo, Texas.
