SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's saved the best for last in a thrilling nightcap of the Rattler/Hilltopper Classic.
Battling Texas Woman's in a seesaw affair, the Rattlers and Pioneers engaged in a spirited match, where Texas Woman's clawed back from a 2-1 deficit to take the match in five at Bill Greehey Arena.
The match, the highlight of the tournament, saw
Kelsey Huber (Jr., San Antonio) pound out the decisive point for St. Mary's, giving it a 25-23 victory to take a 2-1 lead three sets into the match. But Texas Woman's battled back in the fourth, hammering out a 25-11 victory to force a fifth set, where the Pioneers prevailed 15-11.
Huber led the Rattlers (0-4) with 15 kills, while setter
Rachael Scicchitano (Fr., McKinney, Texas) had a match-high 48 assists in her second start of the season.
Earlier in the day, Adams State took St. Mary's Volleyball in straight sets, 3-0, to start the final day of the Rattler/Hilltopper Classic, as the Rattlers struggled to find their rhythm against the 23
rd-ranked team in the nation.
Adams State (2-1) won the match 25-19, 25-16, 25-17 before 80 fans at Bill Greehey Arena.
Huber led the way for the Rattlers with 11 kills and
Victorria Martinez (Jr., Arlington, Texas) posted a team-high 16 digs. Making her first start for St. Mary's (0-3),
Rachael Scicchitano, making her first start for St. Mary's had 26 assists.
The Rattlers struggled to pose much of an offensive attack, hitting .128 compared to Adams State's .371 average.
Letisha Spencer led Adams State with 13 assists, followed by Lindsey Stindt with 10. Gabriella Riffilato had a game-high 42 assists.
St. Mary's will return to the court Thursday, when it travels to Lubbock, Texas for its Heartland Conference opener against Lubbock Christian. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
