SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's University Volleyball head coach Kristine Pelky today announced the hiring of Alec Straw as her assistant coach.

Straw comes to the Rattlers from Abilene Christian, where he was a graduate assistant coach during the 2025 season. With the Wildcats, he worked with the pin hitters, coordinated in-match serving and passing, and handled scouting and recruiting duties.

"I'm thrilled to have Alec joining the staff at St. Mary's," said Pelky. "He brings an enthusiasm for the game and has shown he is a capable coach and recruiter. I know he will help us build a culture of success and make a positive impact on those around him."

Prior to ACU, Straw spent a year as a volunteer assistant coach at UC Santa Barbara, serving as the offensive and travel coordinator. He also assisted in recruiting and directing the Gauchos' summer camps.

For five years, he was the assistant director and master coach for the Iowa Select Volleyball Club in Davenport, organizing camps and clinics, practices and trainings for 25 different teams, and coached teams in 15-17 age brackets.

He was the varsity head coach at Durant High School and had a stint as the varsity assistant coach at Moline High School. Prior to his coaching career, Straw was a member of the men's volleyball team at Augustana College, where he played as a pin hitter and defensive specialist.

Straw earned a bachelor's degree in business management from Augustana College in May 2024.
