Volleyball sharp in beating TAMIU, challenging No. 12 WTAMU

Box Score SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Volleyball couldn't have picked a better time to find its groove.
 
With Heartland Conference play heating up, the surging Rattlers swept Texas A&M International 3-0 at Bill Greehey Arena on Saturday to improve to 3-1 in league play.
 
The victory, their sixth over the previous eight matches, moved the Rattlers (6-7, 3-1) to second place behind league leader UA Fort Smith, who is 5-0 on the season.
 
St. Mary's followed that victory Saturday with a competitive showing against No. 12-ranked West Texas A&M, taking a set off the Lady Buffs in a 3-1 defeat.
 
Against TAMIU, Kelsey Huber and Lauren Holman led St. Mary's offensive attack against TAMIU (1-12) with 10 kills apiece, as the Rattlers hit .299 as a team.
 
Victorria Martinez, the reigning two-time Heartland Conference Libero of the Week, had a team-high 18 digs, while setters Mikayla Bass and Rachael Scicchitano had 14 assists apiece.
 
St. Mary's limited the Dustdevils to just a .105 hitting percentage, as the Rattlers breezed through the match 25-17, 25-22, 25-14.
 
Fresh off the win, the Rattlers came out on fire early against WTAMU (12-3). St. Mary's led the first set 13-11, and though they eventually lost the set the Rattlers fired back in the second to post a 25-21 win. West Texas A&M battled back, though, winning the match 25-16, 21-25, 25-19, 25-16.
 
Huber had a match-high 17 kills against West Texas A&M, while Karlie Ortega also had double-digit kills with 11. Scicchitano had 21 assists to Bass' 20, while Martinez  had a match-best 28 digs.
 
St. Mary's will be back in action on Thursday, when it travels to Panhandle, Okla., to take on Oklahoma Panhandle State at 7 p.m.
