SAN ANTONIO — Two Rattler runs weren't enough to hold the Rams as No. 5 St. Mary's fell to Angelo State Tuesday night, 5-2.
St. Mary's held a two-run lead after the third inning but the Rams scored two of their own in the fifth followed by a run in the sixth and two more in the eighth after walks plagued the mound for the Rattlers.
Falling to 22-10 on the season, head coach
Charlie Migl is still contending for his 1,000th career win. A sweep of Texas-Permian Basin this weekend would enter Migl into the 1,000 club as one of just 11 Division-II coaches to achieve the honor.
A five-man pitching rotation that totaled 10 walks including a walked-in run in the fifth couldn't be erased by bats as St. Mary's totaled just three hits for the contest to the Rams' seven.
Kyle Bumpas (Jr., El Paso, Texas) led at the plate with two hits and
Billy Richard (Sr., Schertz, Texas) tallied the third hit with a single in the fourth.
The Rattlers were also able to nab a walked-in run after
Derek Moczygemba (Sr., Bulverde, Texas) took a free base to bring in
Al Gonzalez (RS-Fr., Pasedena, Texas) in the third.
Mario Maldonado (So., Laredo, Texas) still had the bases loaded and was able to pick up an RBI after a groundout to short in the Rattlers' final run of the game.
Moczygemba recorded the loss to fall to 1-2 on the season. The lefty tossed 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts, allowing three earned runs off five hits.
Rick Villa (RS-Jr., San Antonio) pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief followed by
Jonathan Perez (RS-Sr., San Antonio), who tossed one inning.
Colter Bostick (Jr., Powell, Wyo.) and
Greg Dobb (RS-Fr., Keller, Texas) also saw time on the mound, tossing 2/3 and 1/3 innings respectively.
Currently holding the No. 1 spot in the Heartland Conference, the Rattlers must focus on keeping ahead of the pack and prepare of Texas-Permian Basin.
“UTPB always comes to play,” said Bumpas who is hitting .333 on the season. “With the race being kind of close all these games are important so we definitely need to take them seriously.”
St. Mary's starts the series with UTPB with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday at San Antonio ISD Sports Complex.
