SAN ANTONIO — Cross-town rival Incarnate Word continues to be a thorn for the Rattlers as they took two games from St. Mary's Tuesday, winning by just one run in each.
The Rattlers fell in Game One 6-5 — despite two solo blasts — and a Rattler grand slam fell hard but couldn't uplift St. Mary's as it lost by one once more, 6-5, in Game Two.
Laura Benavidez (So., Robstown, Texas) went yard in the third to bring the score to 2-1 after an RBI triple from
Taylor Vidrine (So., San Antonio) in the first. St. Mary's picked up two more runs in third, and went into its last at-bat down two, 6-4.
Christina Rodriguez (Sr., San Antonio) sparked hope for a comeback with a solo home run in the seventh but the Cardinals were able to put a stop on the Rattlers' momentum, claiming the victory.
Maricela Bissaro (Jr., San Antonio) had the start in Game 1 and recorded the loss, failing to 3-3 on the season. Bissaro tossed three innings, allowing four earned runs.
Crystal Keller (Sr., LaCoste, Texas) pitched three innings in relief, allowing one earned run.
The Cardinals (20-12) hit heavy and quick in Game 2, scoring five runs in the first inning. The Rattlers had just as an impressive fifth inning however, as Vidrine pelted a grand slam after an RBI single from
Shelly Lee Zawadzki (Sr., San Antonio) that brought it within one, 6-5. But again time ran out and the Rattlers dropped their second game on the day.
Emily Brittain (Jr., Corpus Christi, Texas) was in the circle in Game Two, picking up her fourth loss on the season for a 16-4 record. Brittain went the complete game, pitching six innings and striking out five.
St. Mary's dropped to 28-12 on the season with Tuesday's losses, ending the season series with Incarnate Word 1-3.
The Rattlers get back to Heartland Conference play next week, starting a three-games series against Texas A&M International. St. Mary's starts a doubleheader next Friday, April 5th in Laredo, Texas at 1 p.m.
