No. 48 Women's Tennis defeats conference UTPB

PLANO, Texas — The No. 48 St. Mary's women's tennis team won its second consecutive conference match Sunday defeating opponent Texas-Permian Basin 8-1 on a windy day at Plano West High School.
 
The Lady Rattlers started off with a 2-1 lead following the completion of doubles. Wins for St. Mary's came at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions by the scores of 8-3, and 8-5. At the No. 3 position UTPB took an 8-5 victory.
 
In singles The Lady Rattlers swept at every position without dropping a set.
 
At No. 1 singles No. 28 Mariana Rong continued her unbeaten streak with a straight set victory over UTPB's Casey Acosta 6-4, 6-1.
 
At the No. 2 and No. 3 positions Felicity Delgado and Christina Lopez picked up nearly identical scores with wins of 6-0, 6-1, and 6-1, 6-0, respectively.
 
The No. 4 and No. 5 positions were the most closely contested matches of the day. Valentine Lambrechts defeated Olivia Baltazar of UTPB 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4. In the No. 5 singles match, Ariana Saldana held on in two close sets to win 7-6, 7-5 over UTPB's Shelby Greene.
 
Freshman Joanie Bryant played solid match to tally a 6-2, 6-3 victory over UTPB's Sydney Holdampf at the No. 6 position.
 
“Another conference win for us is always a good thing,” said head coach Lisa Dausin. “Now we refocus for our next match. We'd still like to get a doubles sweep on this trip.”
 
St. Mary's Women's tennis moves to 7-3 on the season with the win. They return to the court to face East Central University Monday at the L.B. Houston Tennis Center in Dallas.
