SAN ANGELO, Texas — The Lady Rattlers were able to exact revenge Friday on Angelo State University, which gave St. Mary's its first loss of the season in the Rattlers' opening College Softball Classic earlier this month.
St. Mary's knocked off the No. 4 nationally ranked Rambelles in a high-scoring contest, 10-9, before winning its second game on the day against Colorado State University- Pueblo, 6-2, in the Angelo State Round Robin.
The Rattlers (9-5) trampled Angelo State's (8-3) home field in the opening day of the tournament, smacking 12 hits in the double-digit game with
Jared Gonzalez (Sr., San Antonio) going yard for her first home run of the season for two RBIs.
Vianna Gutierrez (So., San Antonio) also had two RBIs off one hit against the Rambelles and
Nicole Sardelich (So., Angleton, Texas) and
Shelly Lee Zawadzki (Sr., San Antonio) each brought in an RBI apiece.
Leading the Rattlers in batting average and hits so far this season, Saredich added four more against Angelo State, going 4 for 5 at the plate. Zawadzki and
Hannah Fields (Fr., San Antonio) also had multiple-hit games, recording two apiece. Two-time Conference Pitcher of the Year Emily Brittian (Jr., Corpus Christi, Texas) picked up her fourth win on the season with two strikeouts, scattering eight hits over four innings.
The Rattlers kept their winning pace for their second game on the day against the Thunderwolves, slicing a 6-2 victory. Gutierrez tossed a sharp game in the circle, going the full seven innings to pick up 10 strikeouts in the win to improve to 2-3 on the season. Sardelich again had the hot bat, smacking three hits in four at-bats to lead the Rattlers' nine-hit game. Zawadzki again recorded a pair of hits as well as two stolen bases.
St. Mary's will have a another shot at the nationally ranked Angelo State and can end its season series 2-1 Saturday, but first will face the Thunderwolves (1-1) in San Angelo, Texas at 10:30 a.m. in the final day of the Angelo State Round Robin.
