AUSTIN, Texas — The St. Mary's women's basketball team made this a Valentine's Day to remember.
And it didn't even take any chocolates or roses.
Pulling away in triple overtime, the Lady Rattlers won their 20th straight against St. Edward's, 105-103, in an unforgettable “Battle of the Saints” Thursday night.
Guard
Jackie Woods (Jr., San Antonio) flirted with a triple-double with a game-high 29 points, eight assists and seven rebounds, while fellow Rattler guard
Felicia Jacobs was just as impressive with 21 points, 11 rebounds and five assists as six Rattlers scored in double figures to overcome a spirited and determined St. Edward's (11-10, 4-3 Heartland Conference) squad.
A
Kyra Littlejohn (So., Southfield, Mich.) 3-pointer with 1:20 left in triple OT gave the Lady Rattlers (17-6, 9-2) a lead they would not relinquish, as Jacobs went 4 for 6 from the free-throw line down the stretch to seal the win.
The game kept St. Mary's in the chase to host the Heartland Conference Tournament, as it continues to trail Texas-Permian Basin by a half-game with one conference game remaining. UTPB has two conference games left.
St. Mary's erased a nine-point deficit with 6:40 remaining, and Woods sent the game to OT tied at 77-77 by hitting a free throw with 10 seconds remaining.
Rattler fans had to buckle in from there, as neither team led by more than two points in the first OT. Deadlocked at 83-83 entering double OT, St. Mary's clung to a five-point lead midway through the period before St. Edward's came back to tie it up at 91-91 with 26 ticks left.
Forward
Mariah Lee (Jr., Houston) scored 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while point guard
Liz Boyd (Sr., San Antonio) scored 13. Forwards
Bria Bell (Jr., Mesquite, Texas) and
Morgan Pullins (So., Franklin, Mich.) added 11 and 10, respectively.
St. Mary's will travel to Abilene, Texas to take on McMurry at 2 p.m. Saturday.
